The United Nations General Assembly announced on 21 December 2012 that International Day of Forests would be celebrated every year on 21 March. The first official event took place on 21 March 2013.

There was a reason why the date of 21 March was decided to celebrate Forest Day. The day falls around the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. Day and night are equal on 21 March, which symbolizes the balance of nature and ecology.

Theme of International Day of Forests 2025

The United Nations sets a theme for Forest Day every year. The theme for 2024 was “Forests and Innovation”. At the same time, the theme of International Day of Forests 2025 is “Forests and Food”. This theme highlights the important role of forests in food security, nutrition and livelihoods.
