Is Gen Z Around the World Losing Interest in Sex? Japan Shows the Trend

Gen Z in Japan:

Many young people in Japan especially from Gen Z are losing interest in sex and relationships. Studies show that around half of them have no sexual experience by the age of 25, and about 1 in 10 still remain inexperienced even at 30. This is quite different from the past when people were more sexually active at a younger age. Interestingly, even among married couples aged 20–49, nearly 52% don’t have regular sex, meaning they have sex less than once a month or not at all. Researchers call these relationships “sexless marriages.”

Gen Z in Japan:

Why Is This Happening?

There are several reasons behind this major shift:

Attachment to Anime and Fictional Characters:

Many young people, especially men, feel emotionally attached to anime or fictional characters instead of real partners. They call this a “2D complex.” These characters are seen as ideal and less complicated than real people, making real-life relationships seem difficult or stressful.

Rise of Hentai and Virtual Intimacy:

Instead of regular adult content, Gen Z in Japan prefers hentai because of its creative stories and fantasy appeal. This makes virtual pleasure more attractive than real experiences.

Lack of Sex Education and Awareness:

Although condoms and birth control pills are available, they are not covered by insurance and are sometimes misunderstood. Schools in Japan do not teach proper sex education, and many young people fear pregnancy or embarrassment, which keeps them away from sex.

Work Pressure and Lifestyle Stress:

Japan’s work culture is intense many work more than 60 to 70 hours a week. With low salaries and high stress, most young people say they have no time or energy for relationships. Some men, called “herbivore men,” show no interest in dating or marriage at all.

Is Anime Influencing Global Gen Z?

Researchers are concerned that anime’s worldwide popularity might affect how Gen Z views real relationships. More than half of Gen Z globally watches anime. Experts warn that too much focus on fictional or “perfect” characters may lead to loneliness and unrealistic expectations. A 2025 study found that heavy anime or hentai users often feel more anxious or depressed and prefer virtual worlds over real ones, leading to social isolation—known in Japan as “hikikomori.”

However, not all effects are negative. Some believe anime helps young people express emotions and find like-minded communities. The key is balance—fiction can be enjoyable, but avoiding real connections may create deeper loneliness.
