Today, matcha-the finely ground green tea powder from Japan-has gained super stardom in wellness and culinary landscapes. From Insta-worthy lattes to anti-oxidant infused desserts, it is literally everywhere. But then the question arises as many more people globally would be sipping on matcha, wondering, is it going to run out soon?
In the past decade, matcha has become more than just a tongue-indexed Japanese tea. Among the high-men who perform tea ceremonies. It has now been introduced to the common masses. This is- from New York to New Delhi- found in most cafes across the globe. Sharing one thing in common: social media turned out to be another face of launching the green drink into popular phenomenon. Allowing wannabe Instagram stars, health-conscious people, and food lovers to share this consumption.
Indeed, this sudden immense demand uproars pressure on the regions in Japan that produce this. Especially, Uji, Shizuoka and Nishio, areas known for authentic ceremonial-grade matcha, which is being produced in limited amounts.
Supply Versus Sustainability
It’s true that matcha fields can be expanded, but it isn’t exactly like multiplying tea bushes that will produce great product. Leaves need to be shade-grown, picked by hand, steamed, dried, and stone-ground-an operation that takes time and skill. Thus, really good premium matcha is limited, with rising demand brewing costs for either that or drowning the market with inferior options.
Will it all just disappear?
That is an unlikely scenario. Farmers are adapting, and matcha-growing areas are expanding to include areas outside of Japan. Even if everyone agrees that the real one gold standard remains in that country. Perhaps, what changes will be access and affordability with which real, high-quality product is found.
