Is Your Multivitamin Secretly Harming Your Liver? Early Warning Signs

Many people use multivitamins to correct nutrient deficiencies. While they are helpful for some people, they may be harmful—particularly to your liver. If consumed in excess, or in combination with other substances, they may silently strain or damage your liver over time. Here are seven warning signs your multivitamin may be causing liver problems.

1. You are Always Tired or Weak

If you feel perpetually tired, stress to the liver may be the culprit. High doses of vitamin A, iron, or niacin can overload the liver, limiting the liver’s regulatory ability and how it helps produce energy.

2. You Have Pain Above Your Right Abdomen

The liver resides in the upper right region of your abdomen. If that area feels sore, full, or distended, your liver might be inflamed. Some multivitamins may cause swelling or irritation with their consumption (particularly those with elevated doses) over a long period of time.

3. You Feel Nauseous or Have Digestive Difficulties

Do you feel bloated or nauseous after you take your multivitamin? That also may be a sign. Your liver may be irritated by excess vitamins. These same symptoms may irritate your stomach, with these symptoms often occurring soon after you begin using a new supplement.

4. You Observe Yellow Skin or Eyes (Jaundice)

Jaundice means you have yellow skin or eyes. This is usually a sign of liver disease. This happens if there is too much bilirubin in the blood and your liver cannot make it get eliminated. Supplements that are high in vitamin A, too much iron, and mostly herbal extracts can take cause this.

5. Your Urine is Dark and Your Stools are Pale

Dark urine and pale stools usually mean your liver is not functioning properly. This is due to bile flow being blocked. High doses of some vitamins can sometimes cause your liver to become inflamed which keeps it from being able to do this properly.

6. Your Skin is Itchy Without a Rash

The itchiness of your skin and the absence of any rash could signal something about the liver. Usually, damaged liver can send a buildup of bile salts under your skin, which can make you itchy. Supplements can contain high doses of niacin, vitamin A and iron can trigger this.

7. You Bruise Easily or Bleed More Than Usual

The liver makes proteins that are helpful to allow your blood to clot. If there is liver damage, bruising and bleeding may come easier. Too much vitamin E can interfere with this liver function, supply or nutrient interaction can disrupt function as well.

If you see any of these signs, halt the supplement and talk to a doctor. Never take too high of a dose without talking to a physician. Make sure you take care of your liver.
