Major Mistakes Ever Made in the History
Mistakes are common and inevitable. They are learning opportunities that help in improving. Time has witnessed incredible successes and the worst blunders. While some mistakes come as blessings in disguise, some blunders change the course of history. Here are some of the major mistakes ever made in the history that had extreme consequences.
The Titanic and Binoculars
Despite being called the “unsinkable,” Titanic sank in 1912 on an expedition from Southampton to New York. Considered one of the most unfortunate tragedies in the world, it killed over 1500 people. Although the ship was equipped with advanced technology, a collision with a massive iceberg flooded the ship and took many lives. It is said that a binocular could have avoided the biggest mishap. The second officer, David Blair, locked the cabin with binoculars and took the keys with him. After the reordering, the officers on duty had no access to binoculars and failed to see the gigantic iceberg ahead.
Russia and Alaska
1867 Russian emperor Tsar Alexander II sold Alaska to the United States for 7.2 million dollars. Many thought the United States spent a whopping money on a barren wasteland. However, it was discovered later that Alaska was rich in oil, gold, and other resources. Had Russia kept Alaska with it, it would have been an immensely valuable asset today.
The Apollo 13 Disaster
During its construction, damaged wire insulation in Apollo 13 caused an oxygen tank explosion while on the mission. The tank blasted after a heater was turned on during the flight. Apollo 13 disaster is called a successful failure since the crew, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert, failed to land on the moon but returned to Earth safely.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa was not leaning when its construction began. Since the tower foundation was built on soft ground, it started leaning gradually. Although it looks marvelous and attracts visitors today, it is a testament to human error.
