The Southwest Monsoon in Kerala is here officially, and the state is experiencing an early onset after a 16-year gap. Heavy rains have resulted in red alerts in several districts, such as Kannur and Kasaragod, for which the authorities have closed down tourist attractions due to safety concerns.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the monsoon hit eight days ahead of schedule, with heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Red Alert: Has been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod, meaning very heavy rainfall.
Orange Alert: Declared in nine other districts, cautioning of potential flooding.
Yellow Alert: Issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha, indicating moderate disruptions.
Tourism Affected: Tourist Places Shut Down
Owing to security concerns, authorities have shut a number of tourist sites in Kerala:
All tourist destinations in Kasaragod district.
All tourist destinations in Kannur till May 27.
Beaches, waterfalls, and riversides in Kozhikode.
Boating, kayaking, and rafting operations put on hold in Idukki, including Munnar’s Mattupetty Dam.
The excess rains have brought about landslips, flooding, and power failures across various places.
Residences and crop losses damaged due to high winds.
Water-logging on roads, impeding transport.
Emergency response teams deployed to help affected regions.
Government Response & Precautions
Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has promised that the government remains on high alert for the next week.
Disaster response squads are on duty throughout the state.
Evacuation preparations are set ready for landslide-prone regions for safety.
Public were warned to avoid travelling to affected areas until conditions ease due to any reason.
The early arrival of the monsoon has resulted in heavy rains and inconvenience to Kerala. The impact is on especially Kannur and Kasaragod.
