In rainy weather, people seek out fried and spicy food. Many people love golden fried prawns during the monsoon! The sound of raining and cooler weather makes comfort food so inviting. We should ensure that our eating habits align with the seasons for our well-being.

Health Problems in Monsoon

Monsoon season brings with it an array of health challenges, such as waterborne diseases, dengue, malaria, and infections; every monsoon season waterborne diseases become more common.
Also, due to the seasonal change, our digestion becomes slower at this time of year. It is important to eat light and healthy foods during this time. We require a strong immune system to fend off monsoon-related illness.

Seafoods During the Rainy Season

Seafood, like prawns, are able to provide protein and in great flavours. However, during the monsoon they should be eaten carefully. The reason being that monsoon brings the breeding season for prawns and many fish. Eating seafood during the breeding season may affect marine life and sustainability. It’s better to eat plant-based proteins, seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Digestion & Infection Risks

We need to be mindful when eating prawns, particularly if they are not fresh that could lead to future issues with our stomachs or infections. In rainy season, we need to be careful about hygiene for all types of food! It’s always safer to ensure seafood is safe and properly stored, than to face an issue.

What the Experts Say

Dr Anju Sood, a nutritionist in Bengaluru gave her opinions. She said people traditionally believe that seafood should be avoided in months with no “R.” However, scientists have proven that monsoon is a risky time for eating prawns. I would recommend seafood should be avoided in the rainy season for safety and sustainability reasons.

Should I Just Avoid Prawns?

If prawns are properly stored and cooked you still take a chance eating them, they may be safe, but they will never be totally safe. Want to eat prawns, select a reputable source and follow food safety rules. If you have a weak digestive system or recently unwell, you should avoid prawns.
