Railway Rules 2025:
Every day, millions of passengers travel across India by train. Indian Railways provides comfortable and affordable travel options for everyone. However, not all passengers behave properly during the journey. Some people drink alcohol and create trouble for others. To prevent this, Indian Railways has strict rules about alcohol consumption inside trains and railway stations.
According to the Railways Act, 1989 (Section 145), drinking alcohol inside a train or at a railway station is a punishable offence. If any passenger is found drunk, behaving rudely, or causing inconvenience to others, railway officials have the right to remove them from the train or station immediately. The person will also lose their ticket or travel pass and may face a fine or jail term.
For the first-time offence, a person can be fined ₹100. If the same offence is repeated, the punishment becomes more serious — up to one month of imprisonment and a fine of ₹250. In extreme cases, depending on the seriousness of the behaviour, the court can increase the punishment to six months in jail or a fine of ₹500.
These rules are meant to ensure safety and comfort for all passengers. Imagine someone drinking and disturbing others during a night journey — it not only causes discomfort but can also lead to fights or safety risks. That’s why railway staff are trained to act quickly in such situations.
For example, if a person boards the train after consuming alcohol and starts using abusive language or behaves indecently, railway employees can remove that person under Section 145. Once removed, further legal action may follow as per the Railway Act.
So, if you ever notice anyone drinking or misbehaving inside a train, you can report it to the railway staff or use the helpline. Authorities will take strict action to maintain a peaceful and safe environment for everyone.
Next time you travel, remember — alcohol and train journeys do not mix. Follow the rules, travel responsibly, and help make Indian Railways safe for all.
