Ranbir Kapoor Rejected This Biopic for Ramayana; Deets Inside

Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor recently had his chance to star in a biopic on the legendary Kishore Kumar, just to jettison it in favor of playing Lord Ram in undoubtedly the most awaited two-part screen adaptation of Ramayana directed by Nitesh Tiwari. Ranbir Kapoor Rejected This Biopic for Ramayana; Deets Inside.

Ranbir Kapoor Rejected This Biopic

He took a decade, sitting on the script, and finally made the announcement that he had developed a biopic for the legendary singer Kishore Kumar. But when the role was offered to Ranbir, it clashed with the Ramayana dates. Basu said, “Ranbir had a choice to make in life … Kishore or Ramayana … a very difficult decision … In the end, he chose Ramayana, and I think it was the right decision.”

Ramayana: What Is It All About?
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari (Dangal, Chhichhore), the film is releasing in two parts—Part 1 for Diwali 2026. And then the Part 2 for Diwali 2027.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes: Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram; Sai Pallavi as Sita. And Yash as Ravana; as well as Sunny Deol, Amitabh Bachchan, Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil.

Behind the Curtains: What Did He Stakes in the Decision?

That Ranbir chose Ramayana over the Kishore biopic means that he has a craving for grand cinematic scale and epic storytelling.

This is supposed to indicate that Ranbir’s inclination toward long-term prestige cinema continues, while Anurag has to re-cast the part of Kishore Kumar.

Caution Meets Ambition
One comparison that has been drawn between Tiwari’s Ramayana and other big global epics is the scale and technological muscle behind it. For example, the team reportedly uses 86 cameras and top-level VFX technology—something inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

Ranbir’s casting attracted controversy when some fans stated that he was unworthy of the role. Just based on previous statements and comparisons with iconic portrayals like Arun Govil’s.

Ranbir Kapoor’s decision to trade off his Kishore Kumar biopic in favor of stepping into Lord Ram’s shoes for Ramayana makes for a defining choice in his career.
