Reasons for Heart Attack in School Kids Parents Must Know

While it is rare, in fact, that school-age children experience heart attacks or sudden cardiac arrests, it is becoming more and more an event reported worldwide. A number of recent cases from various parts of the world denoted that even healthy-looking kids at times succumb to heart-related events when they exert themselves in physical activities or even when at school. A combination of congenital, lifestyle, and environmental factors usually triggers most events. Reasons for Heart Attack in School Kids Parents Must Know.

The Main Risk Factors Parents Should Watch
1. Congenital and Genetic Conditions
Some children are born with structural heart issues like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or an abnormal coronary artery. Most of these conditions go unnoticed until a very severe outcome occurs during physical stress.

2. Childhood Obesity and Poor Nutrition
Sedentary lifestyles and diets high in processed foods, sugary drinks, and trans fats keep adding evil qualities such as causing obesity, hypertension, high levels of LDL cholesterol, and early-onset diabetes-all prime risk factors associated with early cardiovascular disease.

3. Sedentary Lifestyle and Physical Inactivity
It’s possible to observe that many children are poorly conditioned because of increased screen time and severely restricted outdoor activity. Physical inactivity does not only contribute to obesity but can weaken cardiovascular health so that sudden exertion becomes riskier.

4. High Blood Pressure and Cholesterol
Hypertension and high LDL cholesterol have ceased to be only adult conditions. Research indicates that 7-10% Indian children are hypertensive while 15-30% have high cholesterol levels, silent threats to heart health

5. Inflammatory and Infectious Conditions
Kawasaki disease, myocarditis, which are largely responsible for viral infections such as COVID-19, can lead to inflammation of the heart or coronary vessels and can cause sudden cardiac events in children.

6. Stress, Poor Sleep and Environmental Factors
Chronic academic pressure, mental stress, polluted air, lack of sleep, and exposure to secondhand smoke or tobacco also strain cardiovascular health, elevating risk even in young individuals.

What Parents Should Know:

Schedule Regular Health Check Ups: Screening congenital defects from early childhood through adolescence with routine blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose screen.

Encourage Balanced Diets: Distributions of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and reduced servings of processed foods are great sells against obesity and metabolic syndrome .

Encourage Physical Activity: Decrease screen time and encourage at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise every day. Gradual conditioning lessens risk of cardiac events during exertion .

Monitor Mental Health & Sleep: Stress management, and ensuring 8-10 hours sleep. Teach breathing exercises, maintain regular schedules, and reduce academic pressure.

Be Alert to Symptoms: Look for chest pain, fainting, palpitations, dizziness, or unexplained fatigue during play or sports. Immediate medical attention becomes critical.
