Crying is a normal behavior for babies. Understanding the cause is the first step. A famous pediatrician shared a useful technique. Dr. Ravi Malik posted an instructional video. His method can calm a baby quickly.
Check if the baby is hungry first. See if the diaper is wet or dirty. Feel if the baby is too hot. Ensure the baby is not too cold. Check the room temperature carefully.
Wrap the baby in a soft cloth. Use a light blanket for swaddling. This action makes the baby feel secure. It mimics the snug womb environment. The baby often calms down quickly.
Holding an infant on their side must be done using the parent’s stomach as support. This gives the baby a sense of comfort and security, as it feels held securely and close by the parent. Babies will often stop crying instantly when placed in this position.
The ‘shhh’ sound made near the baby’s ear mimics the actual sounds they experienced in the womb and can be very soothing to infants. Make sure to continue the sound at a calm and consistent volume. Doing so also helps block out additional loud noises.
Gently rocking or swinging the infant in small amounts of motion and at a slow speed helps to calm the baby down, and is a comforting motion that reminds the baby of being carried by a parent. In no circumstance should parents shake an infant fast or in an aggressive manner.
Let the baby suck on something they modify to remove. Provide the baby with a clean pacifier, if they need it. If not, the parent’s clean finger will also do the job. Instinctively, even as an infant, sucking is a natural way to relieve, and usually bring about a calming effect, very quickly.
The technique involves multiple methods of calming through different senses: touch, sound, and motion. Collectively, these methods will create a sensation that is similar to what the baby experienced in their mother’s womb. Babies will instinctively respond positively to the familiarity created by these methods of calming. As a result, the technique addresses a baby’s most basic need, which is a feeling of safety and security.
Always make sure your baby will have a clear air passage for breathing free of restriction. Under no circumstances should parents place a fabric over the baby’s face. Check for any signs of illness or fever. Consult a doctor if crying persists unusually. Your pediatrician can provide personalized advice.
