Top 5 Factors That Affect Weight Loss in South Asian Women

Weight Loss in South Asian Women:

Losing weight can be difficult for South Asian women due to cultural habits, traditional diets, and social pressures. Bangladeshi-Canadian fitness trainer Lamisaa Mahmud recently shared on Instagram that weight loss is not just about diet but also about mindset, stress, and consistency. She emphasized that genetics may play a role, but they don’t decide your fitness journey. “Being South Asian doesn’t mean you’ll always struggle with your weight,” she said. “It means you need to build smarter habits and take control.”

Weight Loss in South Asian Women:

1. Nutrition

South Asian meals often include rice, roti, curries, and fried foods. While these are part of cultural identity, overeating or following strict diets can harm progress. Lamisaa advised focusing on portion control, adding more protein, and balancing traditional foods instead of cutting them out completely.

2. Chronic Stress and Pressure

Many South Asian women experience constant family responsibilities and pressure to look a certain way. This stress raises cortisol levels, which can increase cravings and fat storage. Managing stress through rest, mindfulness, or light activity can make a huge difference.

3. Movement

Women in South Asian households are rarely encouraged to be physically active. Lamisaa highlighted that strength training helps boost metabolism and improve body shape. She suggested finding activities you enjoy to stay consistent.

4. Mindset and Environment

Comments like “don’t eat too much” or “you’ve gained weight” can affect self-esteem. Lamisaa said it’s important to shift focus from guilt to self-care. Building a positive mindset helps make weight loss a long-term habit.

5. Consistency

Many people stop their fitness routines too early or switch between diets frequently. Lamisaa reminded that staying consistent with one plan is the real key to success.

Weight loss is not just physical—it’s emotional and cultural. By staying mindful and consistent, South Asian women can reach their goals without giving up their traditional lifestyle.
