NPCI Safety Tips:
During festivals like Diwali and Dussehra, shopping becomes one of the biggest trends across India. Online stores and apps launch heavy discounts, cashback offers, and festive sales. While these offers attract millions of buyers, they also give scammers a chance to trap people into fake websites, phishing links, and fraud UPI requests. NPCI, which manages services like UPI, RuPay, FASTag, and Bharat BillPay, has warned users to be careful while making digital payments during this festive rush.
Cybercriminals create fake sites and links that look just like real shopping platforms. Always type the web address manually or use verified apps downloaded from official stores. Avoid clicking on links sent through promotional messages, SMS, or forwarded WhatsApp messages. Unknown links can install harmful software and steal your data.
Never transfer money through links or UPI IDs shared outside the shopping app or website. Always make the payment on the official checkout page and confirm the seller’s details before paying.
Many scam messages offer “free gifts” or “festive rewards” but ask for your OTP or payment details. Genuine offers never demand personal information or small advance payments. Always pause and verify before sharing any details.
Some scammers pretend to be from your bank and claim that your payment failed or your account is blocked. They then ask for your OTP to “fix” the issue. Remember, banks and payment apps never ask for OTPs or PINs through calls or messages.
Scammers often create fake urgency by saying an offer will expire soon or your account will be frozen. Take a moment to check the message and confirm its source before responding. Real companies never use pressure tactics.
By following these simple steps, you can make your festive shopping joyful and safe. NPCI’s golden rule is clear — “If in doubt, don’t click or share.” Celebrate the season smartly and keep your hard-earned money protected from online fraud.
