Dr. Utkarsh Gupta, a surgeon from Silverstreak Multispeciality Hospital, explains how certain foods and habits can trigger the formation of kidney stones. Here are seven foods you should avoid to protect your kidneys:

1. Oxalate-Rich Foods

Leafy greens like spinach, beetroot, sweet potatoes, and even nuts and berries are high in oxalates. When oxalates combine with calcium in the kidneys, they form calcium oxalate stones, the most common type of kidney stones. While these foods don’t need to be eliminated, it’s helpful to pair them with calcium-rich foods like milk to reduce oxalate absorption.


2. Too Much Meat

Consuming too much red meat, organ meats, poultry, and fish can lead to higher levels of uric acid in the urine. This increases the risk of developing uric acid and calcium stones. To avoid this, limit portions of animal protein and incorporate plant-based protein sources such as lentils, paneer, and tofu.

3. High Salt Intake

Processed foods like pickles, chips, and restaurant meals are often high in sodium, which can lead to kidney stones. Excess salt forces the kidneys to excrete more calcium, making stones more likely to form. Reducing salt intake can not only help your kidneys but also lower your blood pressure.

4. Sugary Beverages

Drinks like sodas, sweetened juices, and energy drinks can alter the composition of urine, contributing to kidney stone formation. Opting for water, lemon water, or coconut water can keep you hydrated without the risk of stones.

5. Caffeine and Alcohol

Excessive tea, coffee, and alcohol can lead to dehydration, which increases calcium loss in urine. Moderating your intake of these drinks while ensuring adequate water consumption can prevent kidney stones.

6. Vitamin C Supplements

Taking more than 500 mg of Vitamin C daily can increase oxalate production in the body, raising the risk of kidney stones. If you regularly take supplements, consult your doctor, especially if you’ve had stones in the past.

7. Hydration

The simplest and most effective way to prevent kidney stones is staying hydrated. Drinking 2–3 liters of water daily helps dilute substances that can form stones, reducing the risk of kidney issues.

Maintaining proper hydration and making thoughtful food choices can significantly reduce the risk of developing kidney stones.
