No Bullet Trains: America, a global superpower, continues to make significant strides in science and technology, constantly advancing in fields ranging from space exploration to nuclear capabilities. Despite this progress, it’s surprising that the country still lacks a high-speed bullet train system. With 71 national highways and over 5,000 airports, America has a well-developed transportation network, yet bullet train travel remains out of reach for most Americans.
China leads in Bullet Trains:
China leads the world in bullet trains. While the U.S. lags behind, China has already developed over 50,000 kilometers of high-speed railway lines. In comparison, the European Union has around 8,500 kilometers of such lines. Why is the U.S. falling behind China and Europe in this area? It’s a surprising gap that raises many questions.
Why no bullet trains in America?
America still lacks high-speed trains capable of reaching 250 km/h or more. In fact, many Americans aren’t particularly enthusiastic about traveling by train. In some regions, there’s little public support for bullet train projects, and as a result, the government has shown limited interest in prioritizing high-speed rail. For long-distance travel, Americans overwhelmingly prefer cars and airplanes.
High-Speed Rails:
The U.S. government is currently developing two high-speed rail corridors, with several more in the planning stages. However, progress has been slow. Additionally, former President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw funding from these projects has raised doubts about the future of high-speed rail in the U.S. The existing projects include a line connecting San Francisco, California, to Los Angeles and another from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. There are also plans for a high-speed rail line linking Portland, Oregon, to Seattle, Washington, with an extension to Vancouver, Canada. A proposed route between Dallas, Texas, and Houston is also under consideration. However, Trump’s cancellation of grants for these projects has cast uncertainty on their future.
The California state government is overseeing the San Francisco-to-Los Angeles high-speed rail project, which is set to be completed by 2033. Construction is also underway on the Los Angeles-to-Las Vegas route, expected to be operational by 2028. This project is being funded through private investments. However, in recent months, progress has stalled due to actions taken by former President Trump.
