Why Do Non-Drinkers Get Fatty Liver?

Why Do Non-Drinkers Get Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat accumulates in the liver, reducing its ability to function and causing serious health problems over time. Reports indicate that fatty liver disease is also occurring in non-drinkers today. One of the most common types of liver disease is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Here are some of the causes of fatty liver in non-drinkers.

The first cause is said to be metabolic syndrome. It is a group of health problems such as abdominal fat (central obesity), high blood sugar or type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, triglycerides, and high blood pressure. When these come together, the risk of developing fatty liver disease increases significantly.

Excess fat and sugar in the blood, poor cholesterol balance, and high blood pressure put constant stress on the liver. This causes fat to accumulate inside the cells. Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s cells do not respond well to insulin. This makes it difficult to control blood sugar. This causes the liver to store more fat.

Dietary habits also play a big role. A diet high in fructose (such as in sugary drinks), saturated fats, trans fats, and a lot of animal protein can cause fat to accumulate in the liver and worsen insulin resistance. Studies suggest that replacing some of these with plant-based foods such as grains, nuts, and legumes can help protect the liver.

Some studies suggest that conditions such as hypothyroidism, PCOS, and other endocrine disorders can contribute to NAFLD through hormonal and metabolic disturbances.

Sleep deprivation and sleep apnea have been linked to an increased risk of NAFLD. This may be due to disruptions in circadian rhythms and worsening insulin resistance. In particular, watching TV for long periods of time and working long hours can contribute to fatty liver in non-alcoholics.

Environmental pollution, smoking, and nutritional deficiencies also increase the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
