International Women’s Day is an opportunity to remember the efforts of women in securing women’s rights, voting rights, better pay, gender equality, and their efforts to end discrimination and violence.
Origin
Ever since the United Nations declared 8 March as International Women’s Day in 1977, the world is celebrating women’s remarkable achievements on this day. However, the early Women’s Day dates back to the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Furthermore, International Women’s Day has its roots in the Industrial Revolution movements across the US, Soviet Union, Germany, and other Communist countries. From the 1848 first women’s rights convention in New York by activists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott to the 1908 New York protest for voting rights and equality, several movements have emerged to promote women’s rights, safety, and equality. Eventually, the first Women’s Day across Europe was marked in 1911, honoring the martyrs.
It’s an incredible opportunity to recognize women’s immense contribution in cultural, political, social, and economic fields. Their efforts in fighting for women’s rights and gender equality must be remembered.
Celebrating 100 years of International Women’s Day, President Barack Obama in 2011 declared March as Women’s History Month. “International Women’s Day is a chance to pay tribute to ordinary women worldwide and is rooted in women’s centuries-old struggle to participate in society on an equal footing with men. While enormous progress has been made, there is still work to be done before women achieve true parity,” – Obama said.

Women came a long way today. They emerged victorious while enduring patriarchy, fighting male domination, and ending women’s discrimination. They succeeded in significantly changing how the world thinks about them. Still, the road is very long. Especially in developing countries where illiteracy still exists, and religion is mainstream, women are still suffering. Their rights are not upheld, opinions do not matter, and freedom is snatched. Discrimination and violence continues. Wish they, too, celebrate true Women’s Day in all its glory.
