People often consume onion without checking properly. Many people will buy a bulk quantity of onions or grow their own. You use onion in curries, salads, and more. In most cases, onions are healthy in your diet! But, a spoiled onion could cause serious problems. Determine the signs which indicate they are dangerous.
Look for black markings on your onion. These black marks are a type of fungus. Specifically, the fungus is called Aspergillus ni ger. The fungus lives in soil. It can easily infect onions that are growing in the ground. Do not dismiss the dark formations as it indicates a risk to your health!
You can literally peel off the superficial marks on the outer skin. But if the spots are inside the flesh of the onion, you must discard it. Check the inner layers of the onion for the black spots. Discard any onion that feels soft or mushy. Discard any onion that has an unusual or unpleasant odor. All of those signs indicate spoilage.
Again, this black fungus is dangerous. It can produce anaphylactic or severe allergic reactions for some people. People with compromised immune systems should be aware of this risk. For example, persons with HIV or TB need to
exercise caution. Persons with asthma can have severe attacks or die from this fungus. People with diabetes face elevated risks from exposure to this fungus.
The fungus exists as tiny spores. You can breathe in the spores through your nasal passages. From your respiratory tract, the spores can travel to your lungs. This process could cause very serious respiratory infections, and could worsen any pre-existing respiratory condition. Keeping your respiratory system sturdy and healthy is extremely vital.
Always store your onions correctly (for/reason to/from your health). Never refrigerate your onions. Never place a cut onion in the fridge without wrapping it, and never store onions with potatoes either because potatoes give off moisture and gases that cause onions to rot at a faster rate. If you store your onions in the correct way, they will last longer and be in a healthier and safer condition for you.
Regardless if you are using the onion for yourself, somebody in your family, or a friend…always inspect the onion(s) you are using before you start cooking. Your health is more important than a small savings. Throw away any suspect onion, and you will be better off by doing so because it is always better to be safe than sorry. This simple act will help to protect you and your family from illness.
