We celebrate the birthday of Shri Ganesh as Ganesh Chathurthi. This year, we will celebrate the Vinayaka Chavithi festival on Wednesday, August 27. Vinayaka Chavithi is one of the festivals that is celebrated with great enthusiasm by both children and adults. On that festival, everyone worships Lord Vinayaka with devotion. They pray to Lord Vigneshwara that their wishes may be fulfilled.
However, many scholars and elders say that the moon should not be seen on the day of Vinayaka Chavithi. But why should we not see Lord Vinayaka on that day? What will happen if we do? Let’s find out the story behind it here.
According to mythology, it is believed that if you see the moon on the day of Vinayaka Chavithi, you will get blue slander (unjustified accusations or insults). However, scholars tell a famous story regarding this. Let’s see what it is.
Once, Lord Ganesha, after eating a bowlful of dumplings and rice cakes, was riding on his vehicle, a mouse. The mouse was frightened by a snake and stumbled. As a result, Lord Ganesha fell off the mouse and could not get up. Seeing that scene, the moon burst into laughter.
The laughter of the moon makes Ganesha angry. He immediately curses the moon, saying, “From today onwards, those who see you will be cursed.” However, on the day of Vinayaka Chavithi, Shri Krishna and the wives of the seven sages have to bear the blame of the blue sky. With this, Goddess Parvati, as a solution to this problem, listens to Ganesha’s story and tells him not to look at the moon without wearing akshintha. Thus, the belief that the moon should not be seen on Vinayaka Chavithi was formed.
Those who mistakenly see the moon on Vinayaka Chavithi should do some remedial work. They should worship Ganesha with devotion, listen to his story to the end, and wear Akshintha on their heads. Scholars say that if you do this, you will not be cursed by the blue moon.
To get rid of the evil eye of seeing the moon on Vinayaka Chavithi, one should worship Ganesha sincerely and offer flowers and fruits. They should be donated to the poor. It is believed that chanting Ganesha’s mantras with full devotion and attention will prevent any problems or slander in the future.
