Why Young Indians Are Experiencing Early Grey Hair and How to Manage It

Early Grey Hair:

Premature hair greying is becoming a common problem among young Indians, with many noticing grey strands in their 20s. While greying is a natural part of ageing, early onset indicates lifestyle, environmental, and dietary issues. It is no longer limited to middle-aged adults; even college students and young professionals are affected. The good news is that premature greying can be managed with proper care, nutrition, and healthy routines.

Early Grey Hair:
One major reason for early greying is genetics. If your parents or grandparents experienced grey hair early, you are more likely to face it too. However, genetics alone cannot explain the increasing cases. Pollution, stress, and poor diet play a significant role. Environmental toxins and free radicals weaken hair follicles and reduce melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. High stress levels also increase cortisol, which damages hair follicles and speeds up greying.

Diet is another key factor. Many young people eat processed foods and sugary meals, which lack essential vitamins and minerals needed for healthy hair. Deficiencies in nutrients like copper, vitamin B12, iron, and zinc can reduce melanin production, causing hair to turn grey sooner. Including leafy greens, nuts, seeds, dairy, and lean meats can help maintain natural hair color.

Frequent use of chemical-based hair products also contributes to premature greying. Shampoos, dyes, and styling products with sulfates and parabens can strip natural oils and harm follicles. Heat styling further damages hair, making it brittle and more prone to greying. Switching to natural, gentle products and reducing heat use can slow down this process.

Certain natural remedies and ingredients can protect hair. Amla, bhringraj, hibiscus, argan oil, and goji berries are rich in antioxidants and vitamins, helping to strengthen hair and support melanin production. Regular use of these can improve scalp health and delay visible greying.
