Citadel Season 2 Postponed: Amazon Prime Video’s much-talked-about spy series ‘Citadel’ is once again in trouble. Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, the series is produced by Russo Brothers’ company AGBO. The idea of creating a large network with several spin-offs internationally came up through this show. However, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter,’ the producers of the series are not happy with its current status. Recently, the sudden resignation of former Amazon MGL Studios chief Jennifer Salke has also added to the difficulties of this project. After overspending, creative differences, and production delays, the future of ‘Citadel’ now seems to be hanging in the balance.
The second season of ‘Citadel’ was earlier scheduled to release in 2025, but now it is reported that it has been postponed till 2026. Sources say that Amazon MGM has not liked the work done so far on Season 2. Although filming has been completed, the release may be delayed further if the studio demands changes. No official date has been announced yet. Along with this, all spin-off projects have also been put on hold. Jennifer Salke, for whom ‘Citadel’ was the biggest bet, has now left the company. It was Salke who chose the Russo Brothers for this project and tried to present it like ‘James Bond.’
‘Citadel’ is an American spy series created by Josh Applebaum, Brian Oh, and David Weil. In 2021, Applebaum and writer Andre Nemec left the project due to creative differences with the Russo Brothers. The first season was released on 28 April 2023, starring Priyanka Chopra (Nadia Singh) and Richard Madden (Mason Kane) in the roles of spies. After the first season, its second season also came, but now its path does not look easy.
The special thing about ‘Citadel’ was its global appeal, due to which spin-offs were planned in many countries. Two of these—’Citadel: Diana’ (Italy) and ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’ (India)—have already come on the streaming platform. They got a decent audience. ‘Citadel Honey Bunny’ was made in India with Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. It is expected to move forward. However, right now Amazon MGM has stopped work on the rest of the spin-offs until Season 2 is completed. No official decision has been taken on this.
The first season of ‘Citadel’ took a lot of time and a huge amount of money. Due to reshoots, creative changes, and the departure of the team, its budget exceeded $200 million (about Rs 1600 crore), making it one of the most expensive series. It got a good audience outside the US, but the show’s domestic performance was weak. Yet Season 2 was approved, which was surprising. If the second season doesn’t live up to expectations, it could become streaming’s most expensive failed experiment.
