Citadel’s Spyverse Pulled: Amazon’s ambitious Citadel franchise, originally conceived as a multi-country interconnected spy universe, seems to be wrapping up. Rumors had been going around for weeks, and on April 16, Amazon officially announced the cancellation of its Italian spin-off, Citadel: Diana, and the Indian adaptation, Citadel: Honey Bunny. Both shows had only just finished one season before being put on hold, leaving fans to wonder what had happened to Citadel’s other planned versions.
In a rare piece of good news, Amazon has officially confirmed the return of the original US series, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, for Season 2 in 2026. That said, there are rumors that this new season will be the last one for the franchise as Japan, Mexico, and Spain’s scheduled versions are said to no longer be in production.
Sources show that the original plan was to release Italian, Indian, and Mexican versions following the first season of the US adaptation. If the storyline allowed, Season 2 of the US Citadel was to be broadcast between or after these versions as a wrap-up of the international story. But with the cancellation of the Mexican version, the fate of the Spanish and Japanese spin-offs is uncertain.
Being one of Amazon’s most costly and ambitious initiatives, Citadel was created by Russo Brothers as a worldwide interconnected story, where similar stories unfold on different continents. Though the idea was revolutionary, budget limitations and shifting business strategies caused Amazon to hold back on its initial plan and instead concentrate its resources on Season 2 of the US series.
Even though it put the global expansion on hold, Amazon promises Season 2 will be its most thrilling so far. Rather than remaining as individual projects, the Indian and Italian adaptations will feed into the main story, with characters from Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana flowing into the plot of the main series.
Amazon MGM Studios’ television head Vernon Sanders reiterated that the international spin-offs will not go on alone but that the second season will be filled with lots of action and suspenseful storylines.

With the Italian, Indian, Mexican, Spanish, and Japanese spin-offs cancelled or left hanging, it looks as though Citadel’s one-time vast spy universe might be running out of pages. Viewers are waiting anxiously for how Season 2 of the US Citadel will wrap up loose ends, possibly bringing an end to the ambitious multi-national experiment that sought to reinvent television storytelling.
Will this be Citadel’s final bow, or will Amazon surprise audiences with a new direction? Only time will tell.
