Some Interesting Facts of Squid Game

It will be a blatant lie if someone tells you they are unfamiliar with Squid Game. This Netflix Korean show amassed wide popularity not only for its heavy dose of violence but also for telling the cruel facts of the society we live in. Besides violence, it explores the sinister side of the rich and poor at the core. In addition to that, the two seasons of Squid Game are one of the most binge-watched shows on Netflix. As season 3 of Squid Game is all set to arrive this June, here are some interesting facts of this dystopian survival thriller.

1. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk started working on the script in 2008. The story originated from his own financial struggles and class disparity in Korea. Since it’s a universal theme that resonates with everyone, his original plan was to make it a film, but he couldn’t find a production house. It was in 2019 that Netflix came forward to produce it. Netflix found this script relevant and produced it as part of its foreign programming expansion. Hwang Dong-hyuk waited 13 years for his story to come to life.

3. The doll in the Red Light and Green Light game is real. It is at the entrance of Jincheon County, 3 hours from Seoul city.

4. Those who choose blue cards in Ddakji are taken as players and those picked Red are recruited as Pink soldiers.

5. Thanos, the rapper with purple hair, is played by Choi Seung-hyun, also called T.O.P. He was an ex-member of a popular band in Korea before he was handed a 10-month suspended prison sentence with two years probation for smoking marijuana.

6. The phone number on the visiting card is real and belongs to a person in Seoul.

7. Anupam Tripathi played the role of Ali. Since Filipino actor Carlo Aquino couldn’t travel to South Korea due to COVID-19 restrictions, the role went to Tripathi.
