The Squid Game universe could soon expand across continents. While Netflix hasn’t made an official announcement, strong clues point toward a U.S.-based spin-off already taking shape.
A surprise ending in Squid Game Season 3 has sparked global speculation is the deadly game now operating in America?
Season 3 of the South Korean thriller closed with a bold twist. A brief scene showed the Front Man driving through Los Angeles. On a street corner, a familiar game was underway – ddakji, the same game once used to lure players into the original contest. This time, the recruiter was briefly revealed to be none other than Cate Blanchett, in a surprise cameo. The unexpected appearance, paired with the U.S. setting, strongly hints at a potential American spin-off, expanding the Squid Game universe beyond South Korea.
Industry sources reported in late 2024 that Netflix is developing an English-language spin-off. Acclaimed director David Fincher is reportedly attached to helm the project. He’s known for hit Netflix titles like Mindhunter and House of Cards.
Writer Dennis Kelly, best known for the UK series Utopia, is reportedly scripting the episodes. The new show is expected to continue the existing Squid Game timeline, not remake it. Sources day that the filming could begin as early as December, though nothing is confirmed.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed he rewrote the ending to send a stronger message. He originally planned for Gi-hun to survive but changed it to make way for the franchise’s global future.

If the project moves forward, it wouldn’t be Netflix’s first time expanding a global hit. The streamer built successful spin-offs with shows like Money Heist, which led to Berlin, and Narcos, which grew into Narcos: Mexico.
This approach has allowed Netflix to tap into international fan bases while reimagining the story in different regions and cultures.
While Netflix remains silent on the spin-off, the clues are stacking up. With top-tier talent and narrative breadcrumbs in place, the Squid Game universe could soon open its next deadly chapter, this time in America.
