With effect from April 1, 2023, the central government announced on Monday a 24% hike in MPs’ and retired lawmakers’ salaries, daily allowances, and pensions.
The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs also announced an increase in the daily allowances for current members and pensions, as well as an additional pension for each year of service beyond five years for former members. According to the information, Sitting MPs will be receiving a monthly salary of 1.24 Lakh, before this was 1 Lakh per month. Following this, the daily allowances have been increased from 2000 to 2500.
According to the report, the pension for retired MPs has increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 31,000 per month. According to the notification, the supplementary pension for each year of service beyond five years has been raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 per month. Based on the Cost Inflation Index listed in the Income Tax Act of 1961, the increase in wages and pensions was announced in accordance with the authority granted by the Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act.

This is the first change to MP pay and benefits since 2018. A constituency stipend of Rs 70,000 was added to MPs’ base pay of Rs 1,00,000 per month in the most recent revision to cover office costs and voter relations.
In addition, MPs are entitled to 34 free domestic flights per year for themselves and their families, unlimited first-class train travel, a mileage allowance for road travel, and an annual allowance for phone and internet usage. They are eligible for government-provided accommodation in New Delhi, 4,000 kiloliters of water per year, and 50,000 free units of electricity. A housing allowance is available to those who choose not to use official accommodations.
