Transgender Candidate in Bihar Elections: Prashant Kishore’s Jan Suraj Party has announced its first list of 51 candidates for the Bihar Assembly elections. The party selected a Tharu candidate from the Valmiki Nagar seat and a third-gender candidate from the Bhore constituency in Gopalganj. The announcement of the third-gender candidate has sparked public discussion. Party national president Uday Singh said the second list will be released in two to three days. Earlier, RCP Singh, a close aide of Nitish Kumar, released the list.
The Bhore Assembly seat, reserved for Scheduled Castes, will see Preeti Kinnar contesting as the Jan Suraj Party’s candidate. Party leaders unanimously chose her. It’s a unique move to field a transgender candidate in the elections. Education Minister Sunil Kumar from Nitish Kumar’s government currently represents Bhore. He is a former IPS officer who joined the Janata Dal (United) after retirement.
Reports suggest that JDU will likely nominate Sunil Kumar again. This sets up a high-profile contest between a sitting minister and a transgender candidate. Preeti Kinnar has been associated with Jan Suraj for a long time. When RCP Singh announced her candidacy, the crowd responded with loud applause.
Other notable candidates include:
1. KC Sinha, Bihar’s renowned mathematician, is contesting from Kumhrar, Patna, against BJP MLA Arun Kumar Sinha.
2. Dr. AK Das, who received the ticket from Muzaffarpur city, sparked anger among Ward Councilor Sanjay Kejriwal, who may leave the party.
3. Tej Narayan Sahni, contesting from Minapur under the Jan Suraj symbol.

Transgenders in the Police Department:
The Bihar government recently granted job reservations to the transgender community in the state police. Following this announcement, many transgender individuals enrolled, and several now serve as sub-inspectors and constables. These initiatives empower the community and motivate its members to contribute positively to society. By fielding transgender candidates in the elections, Prashant Kishore and the Jan Suraj Party have honored the community and strengthened its political representation.
