C.P. Radhakrishnan: NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India, defeating the India Alliance candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy. Polling was held today inside the Parliament building, where Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs cast their votes through a secret ballot.
The Election Commission of India conducted the election following the resignation of 74-year-old Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post. Nearly 96 percent of MPs exercised their voting rights. According to sources, Radhakrishnan secured the support of 427 MPs, crossing the majority mark of 391. At present, Parliament has 781 members, 542 in the Lok Sabha (with one seat vacant) and 239 in the Rajya Sabha (with five seats vacant).
Returning Officer P. C. Mody, the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, oversaw the counting in the new Parliament building. Official sources said MPs cast more than 98% of the votes by the time polling ended at 5 p.m. Four BRS members, seven BJD members, and one Akali Dal member did not vote. As a result, 769 of the 781 MPs in the electoral college cast their ballots.

Who is C.P. Radhakrishnan?
C.P. Radhakrishnan, who is also known as Chandrapuram Ponnuswamy Radhakrishnan, has been the governor of Maharashtra since 31st July 2024. He also served as governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. His political journey began in 1974 when he was elected as a Jan Sangh State Executive member. From there, he joined the BJP and rose to become a key figure in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet. He later served as a Member of the Lok Sabha, and now, he has taken on the prestigious role of the 15th Vice President of India.
