G7 Summit 2025: Will PM Modi Skip the Summit in Canada?

G7 Summit 2025: Will PM Modi Skip the Summit in Canada?

G7 Summit 2025: Two years after India downgraded its diplomatic ties with Canada over the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil, Canada is set to host the 2025 Group of 7 (G7) Summit from June 15–17. This year, the annual G7 Leaders’ Summit will take place in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Although reports say South Africa, Ukraine, and Australia have accepted invitations from Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at the June summit remains uncertain. The G7 includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The summit is also expected to include the president of the European Commission and leaders from several other nations.

Will PM Modi Skip the G7 Summit 2025?

Amid ongoing diplomatic tensions, officials have yet to confirm whether Prime Minister Modi will attend the G7 Summit in Canada. Sources report that he does not plan to participate in the summit. On Sunday night, a Canadian G7 spokeswoman refused to confirm whether the government would invite PM Modi. Media sources say India will likely reject any last-minute invitation due to logistical hurdles, potential threats from separatist groups, and strained bilateral ties with Canada.

A source stated that Canada has not formally disclosed the list of guest leaders for the summit. However, Canadian media outlets report that Ottawa has already invited the leaders of Brazil, South Africa, Australia, and Ukraine. Since 2019, PM Modi has attended every G7 Leaders’ Summit by invitation. If these reports prove accurate, this year will mark the first time he misses the annual gathering of the world’s most economically advanced nations.

India-Canada bilateral tension:

Relations between India and Canada suffered in September 2023 when then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that Indian government “agents” were behind Nijjar’s assassination. India later rejected these allegations, calling them “absurd and motivated.”

Two years later, all eyes are on whether Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new Canadian administration will invite Prime Minister Modi to the G7 Summit. Both Modi and Carney have pledged to strengthen their bilateral relationship.

Sikh groups are against PM Modi’s Visit:

Sikh organizations have urged Ottawa to break its five-year tradition and refuse to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 Summit. The Sikh Federation of Toronto told international media that Canada should withhold the invitation until India fully cooperates with ongoing criminal investigations in Canada.

Will Canada invite PM Modi?

During a news conference last year, a reporter asked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau whether he would invite Prime Minister Modi to the next G7 Summit. Instead of giving a direct answer, Trudeau reportedly sidestepped the question, saying, “I appreciate the keenness with which Canadians look forward to next year’s G7.”

He added, “However, Italy holds the G7 presidency for the remainder of this year, and I look forward to working with Prime Minister Meloni and all my G7 partners on the broad range of issues we’ve discussed.” Trudeau made these remarks after meeting PM Modi on Friday during the G7 Summit in Apulia, southern Italy, marking their first meeting amid strained diplomatic ties over the issue of pro-Khalistani extremism.
