Govt to Drop Monthly Unemployment Data from May 15

A top official announced on Monday that the government will begin issuing the unemployment data on a monthly basis starting on May 15. They also mentioned that, instead of a quarterly basis, this is going to be easier and systematic. January, February, and March data will be included in the data that will be made public on May 15. According to the official reports, after the release of the previous months, it is going to be released monthly.

Date of Release:

“On May 15, we will provide the data for the first three months. We are doing this for the first time,” the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation official stated. Till now, the government had been publishing data on urban unemployment every quarter and combined rural and urban unemployment data on an annual basis.

Statistics & Expenditure:

The official clarified that internal consistency checks are being performed to ensure that the data collection is representative and statistically sound. The government would follow its directives and release the statistics on private capital expenditures by the end of April. It is also reported that it will start publishing the results of a study of businesses in the service sector next year.

New surveys to track unemployment:

Unlike other large economies, India lacks a framework for collecting and disclosing high-frequency statistics on unemployment. As per the official statement, the government is also trying to release quarterly statistics. This includes the unincorporated sector, which was gathered from the yearly survey of the sector.

The administration has also made the decision to start a quarterly labor force survey for rural areas.
