Hyderabad Metro Phase-2: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy made a fervent appeal to the central government a while back for prompt approval of the ₹24,269 crore Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-2 project. The planned expansion is 76.4 kilometers long and is likely to be a significant factor in addressing the city’s increasing traffic jams while aiding long-term urban development.
To facilitate the project’s early implementation, the Telangana government has proposed sharing a 50:50 joint venture with the Centre. Both governments would equally fund the costs in this proposal, while the remaining funds would be arranged as a loan. The updated Detailed Project Report (DPR), revised as per central government recommendations, is already made ready for approval.
Chief Minister Reddy underlined that cities such as Chennai and Bengaluru had already received central funding for comparable schemes. He pointed towards the pressing necessity of Hyderabad’s Metro expansion to provide improved public transport, reduced pollution rates, and alleviated traffic in busy areas. The extension plan also involves direct metro access to the Hyderabad International Airport, thereby simplifying travel for the locals as well as tourists.
Among other things, Reddy also sought the Centre’s nod for a number of other infrastructure projects. These are:
Finishing the Regional Ring Road
Development of a Regional Rail Network
Concentration of Hyderabad to ports and industrial estates through rail-linking
Joining the India Semiconductor Mission
Creation of a Hyderabad–Bengaluru Defence Corridor

With all technical specifications met and a funding plan well laid out, Telangana now awaits a green light from the Centre. Once sanctioned, this expansion would double Hyderabad’s existing metro coverage. And provide citizens long-term gains through enhanced connectivity, cleaner transport, and new economic prospects.
Revanth Reddy’s appeal is a major shot in the arm for pushing Hyderabad’s development as a smart and sustainable city. Now it is in the Centre’s court, and if the project is cleared at the earliest, it has the potential to revolutionize the way Hyderabad commutes.
