MEA: India will keep the Indus Waters Treaty suspended until Pakistan stops funding cross-border terrorism, the Ministry of External Affairs said Monday.
At a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting on April 23, just one day after the 26-person Pahalgam terror assault, New Delhi took the bold decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.
MEA Response:
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “Now, as per the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) decision of 23 April, India will keep the Treaty in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism. Please also note that climate change, demographic shift,s and technological changes have created new realities on the ground.”

He went on to say that the preamble of the 1960 Indus Treaty said that it was signed in the spirit of peace and goodwill. However, he claimed that Pakistan has weakened these ideals for decades by encouraging cross-border terrorism. Also, the MEA spokesperson reiterated India’s long-standing policy that all concerns about Jammu and Kashmir must be resolved bilaterally between India and Pakistan.

Adding to that, Jaiswal said, “We have a long-standing national position that any issues about the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have to be addressed by India and Pakistan bilaterally. That stated policy has not changed. The outstanding matter is the vacating of illegally occupied Indian territory by Pakistan.”
