Trump: The situation between India and Pakistan changed completely after the deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir on April 22, 2025. As the war was about to start in full swing, the Trump administration intervened as fears grew that it would escalate to nuclear war. Despite initial hesitation, US officials played a key role in reducing tensions between India and Pakistan, according to a New York Times report.
It is known that 26 people were killed in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir on April 22. In response, India carried out attacks on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Although India targeted terrorist camps, Pakistan retaliated. It sent drones and missiles towards Indian cities. India also responded to this in a befitting manner. This led to the possibility of a full-scale war between the two countries. Pakistan was choked by the air strikes carried out by India.
When India was showing a clear advantage over Pakistan, the Modi government’s agreement to a ceasefire surprised everyone. However, the New York Times reported that the US stepped in and convinced both countries to agree to a ceasefire with information that this was a risk of turning into a nuclear war. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are reported to have held talks with India and Pakistan on behalf of the US.
Vice President Vance told Fox News, ” This is not fundamentally an American issue.” The United States can try to calm the two countries, he said, “but this is not an American fight.” However, within a day, both Vance and Rubio intervened, realizing the seriousness of the situation. The United States intervened after it was learned that there had been heavy fighting between the Pakistani and Indian air forces and that Pakistan had sent 300 to 400 drones into Indian territory.
The situation escalated when India attacked the Noor Khan air base in Rawalpindi. The base is not only a key military base for Pakistan, but is also close to the country’s strategic planning division, which manages its nuclear weapons. An attack on such a location could lead to a nuclear war. A former US official familiar with Pakistan’s nuclear program told the New York Times that Pakistan’s biggest fear is “the disruption of its nuclear command structure.”
He said the attack on Noor Khan could be seen as a warning from India. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting of the National Command Authority, which makes decisions related to nuclear weapons. However, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said that the use of nuclear weapons should not be discussed. The Pentagon is taking the situation seriously. “We are concerned about any situation where nuclear powers clash and lead to a major conflict,” said Vice President Vance.
Vance, who recently returned from a trip to India, called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly and explained the seriousness of the situation. Rubio held talks with Pakistan Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir. The foreign ministers of both countries were also contacted. As a result of these talks, a ceasefire was reached. Pakistan praised the US role in the ceasefire. However, India did not respond to this.
