India’s BrahMos Unit: Going to Roll Out 150 Missiles a Year

India’s BrahMos Unit: The BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility in Lucknow was virtually opened by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday. The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, which includes the six major nodes of Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot, is where the state-of-the-art facility is located.

In addition to producing the lighter, next-generation (NG) BrahMos cruise missiles, which would significantly increase India’s precision-strike capabilities from land, air, and sea, the Lucknow facility will assemble and test the country’s current supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles.

What is BrahMos?

The BrahMos is a multipurpose precision-strike missile that launches from aircraft, ships, and land. It operates day or night in any weather. Its multi-role, multi-target, and multi-platform capabilities have earned it a reputation as a true force multiplier on the modern battlefield. Developers have conducted over 100 successful test firings.

Inside BrahMos Unit:

The factory will initially produce 80 to 100 next-generation BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles per year and plans to increase output to 100 to 150 annually. BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya and India’s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), manages the project.

Take a Look at the Video:

The plant will manufacture missiles with a range of 290 to 400 kilometers and a top speed of Mach 2.8, or about 3,430 kmph. According to IANS, the BrahMos missile uses a “fire and forget” guidance system for highly accurate strikes.

The next-generation BrahMos model weighs just 1,290 kg, down from 2,900 kg, making it significantly lighter. This upgrade allows fighter jets like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI to carry up to three missiles instead of just one.

BrahMos Unit Complete Details:

The Uttar Pradesh government donated 80 hectares of land for the missile unit and spent Rs 300 crore on its construction. Officials completed the entire project in about three and a half years, after laying the foundation stone in 2021. The Lucknow unit will also house the Strategic Materials Technology Complex, a titanium and super alloys plant that produces aerospace-grade materials crucial for defense systems.

At the event, officials will lay the foundation stone for another facility. The Defence Testing Infrastructure System (DTIS) will serve as a specialized center for testing and certifying various defense products. Prime Minister Narendra Modi first announced the defense corridor at the 2018 Global Investors’ Summit. Uttar Pradesh becomes the second state after Tamil Nadu to establish a dedicated defense corridor.
