Indus Waters: Pakistan, which has not only given shelter to terrorists on its soil but also become a hindrance to terrorist bases, is suffering more and more. And Pakistan, which is instigating this terrorism against India, is still suffering the consequences. However, that country is not coming to its senses. Taking the loss of 26 innocent lives in the Pahalgam terror attack seriously, India has terminated the Indus Waters Treaty. With this, it has stopped the flow of Indus River water to Pakistan.
This is having a serious impact on the Kharif crops in Pakistan. The water level in the country’s key reservoirs has already dropped completely. This seems to be turning Pakistan into a desert. With a 15 percent reduction in water flow in the Indus basin, Pakistani farmers, who have already suffered greatly due to drought this summer, are already facing more difficulties in the upcoming Kharif season. Experts are already expressing serious concerns.
According to the latest figures, the water level of the Indus River at the Tarbela Dam in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has dropped to 1,465 meters. The minimum water level at Tarbela is 1,402 meters, and with the current water level, it has reached a dangerous level. In Punjab province, the water release has also decreased significantly, causing severe water shortage. While the water release was 1.44 lakh cusecs on June 5 last year, it has now dropped to 1.24 lakh cusecs, according to statistics.
Note: Cusecs: a unit of flow (especially of water) equal to one cubic foot per second
Pakistani officials have revealed that the current water level at Chasma Dam in Punjab is 644 meters. The dead storage of this Chasma Dam is 638 meters. On the other hand, the situation seems to be worse at Marala in Sialkot. While the average water release on the Chenab River was 26,645 cusecs on May 28, it has dropped to just 3,064 cusecs by June 5, raising serious concerns. Due to this severe water shortage, the kharif crops in Pakistan’s Punjab province are now in serious danger.
India has already estimated that Pakistan will face a 21 percent water shortage due to its decision to cancel the Indus Waters Treaty and stop the flow of water. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already said that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty will continue until Pakistan completely changes its stance on terrorism. Analysts are of the opinion that this decision taken by India in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack is increasing severe pressure on Pakistan on the issue of terrorism.
