Kamal Haasan to enter Rajya Sabha: Celebrated actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan will now enter the Rajya Sabha. With the help of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). MNM is part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in Tamil Nadu.
MNM joined DMK in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for future political strength. As part of the collaboration, Makkal Needhi Maiam has now nominated Haasan for a Rajya Sabha seat, which will be in the Parliament for the first time. DMK, which will win 4 out of the 6 available seats. Gave one of the MNM seats to solidify their political partnership.
Since initiating MNM in 2018, Haasan has been an agent of change around transparency, governance issues, and public good and well-being. He had not won an election, and retaining some level of political cooperation with the DMK allows him to push his agenda in the political arena. Now, with the Rajya Sabha nomination, he sees it as a way to extend his political strength.
Haasan’s nomination comes amid ongoing controversy related to his linguistic comments when he stated that Kannada is a derived form of Tamil. The remarks at the screening of Thug Life were slammed by Kannada activists, particularly Karnataka BJP Chief B.Y. Vijayendra and political leaders in the state.
As a Rajya Sabha MP, Haasan’s focus will include culture, social policies, and governance reforms. His presence in Parliament will give him a platform to express himself on critical national discussions involving Tamil Nadu’s interests.
