Key YSRCP Leader Marri Rajashekar Resigns, Set to Join TDP

Political shifts are happening in Andhra Pradesh. Since the alliance government took charge many key leaders from YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) have been leaving. While the party has only 11 seats in the Assembly it still holds a majority in the Legislative Council. But even YSRCP MLCs are now joining other parties. Despite this, no strong efforts are being made to stop them. Meanwhile YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is preparing for district tours.
In a major development another senior leader Marri Rajashekar who was close to Jagan has resigned from the party. Marri Rajashekar, a senior leader from Guntur district has resigned from YSRCP. He has been with Jagan since the party’s formation. Currently serving as an MLC, Rajashekar’s resignation is part of a trend where many YSRCP MLCs have already quit including Pothula Sunitha, Balli Kalyan Chakravarthy, Karri Padma Shri, and Jayamangala Venkataramana.
There were already rumors that Rajashekar would leave the party. But he was waiting for approval from the TDP leadership. Now, with a green signal from TDP he has finally decided to step down.
Marri Rajashekar started his political career as an independent candidate and won from Chilakaluripet in 2004. Later, he joined Congress and contested in 2009 but lost. When Jagan formed YSRCP Rajashekar joined him. He contested again in 2014 from Chilakaluripet but lost.
In the 2019 elections Rajashekar was ready to contest but Jagan gave the ticket to Vidadala Rajini who had joined TDP. To convince him Jagan promised to make Rajashekar an MLC and later a minister. But even after YSRCP formed the governmentit took a long time for Rajashekar to be made an MLC. Eventually, when Jagan expanded his cabinet, instead of making Rajashekar a minister he gave the position to Rajini.
From then, Rajashekar was sidelined in the party. Rajini, who was given priority ignored him. In the 2024 elections, Jagan made him in charge of Krishna district but did not give him a ticket from Chilakaluripet. Instead, Guntur Mayor Kavati Manohar was fielded. After the election defeat, Jagan again gave Chilakaluripet’s responsibilities to Rajini.
In the mean time ,Rajini herself lost the 2024 elections from Guntur West. But Jagan continued to support her which frustrated Rajashekar. His followers pressured him to leave YSRCP as he was not getting the respect he deserved.
Marri Rajashekar finally decided to resign from YSRCP as he was neglected. His entry into TDP now seems confirmed.
