“None Of Our Business” To “Long Night Of Talks”: What’s US Strategy?

US Strategy: Today, US President Donald Trump was the first leader to declare that India and Pakistan, two neighbors with nuclear weapons, had reached a ceasefire agreement. Vikram Misri, the foreign secretary, affirmed the ceasefire a few minutes later.

At 3:35 p.m., the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations announced that all air, sea, and land operations would cease. Mr. Misri stated that the next discussions would take place on May 12.

US Strategy on Ceasefire:

The India-Pakistan conflict following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack forced the U.S. to shift from Vice President JD Vance’s initial “none of our business” stance to urgent diplomatic engagement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s late-night calls and President Trump’s May 10 ceasefire announcement reflect Washington’s growing concern over regional instability and nuclear risks.

Initially reluctant, the U.S. recognized that a South Asian war could derail its Indo-Pacific strategy, overextend diplomatic resources, and threaten global stability. With limited leverage over Pakistan, now more reliant on China, the U.S. balanced support for India’s counterterrorism stance with calls for restraint to avoid escalation.

Washington now pushes for continued de-escalation through high-level diplomacy, pressure on Pakistan to curb terrorism, and backchannel coordination with allies like the UAE and potentially China. The shift underscores the need for sustained U.S. leadership, despite isolationist instincts, to prevent the region from slipping into a broader crisis.

VP Vance Statement:

However, US Vice President JD Vance told the media yesterday that the crisis between India and Pakistan was “fundamentally none of our business,” even though he and Trump had been urging the two neighbors to defuse the situation.  The proclamation of the truce by Trump on X and his own social media platform, Truth Social, quickly revolutionized that.

“We can try to de-escalate the situation a little bit, but we won’t get involved in a conflict that is essentially out of our control and has nothing to do with America’s capacity to govern it. America cannot order the Indians to put down their weapons, you know. We cannot order the people of Pakistan to put down their weapons. In a recent interview, Mr. Vance, who has advocated for the United States to withdraw from international conflicts, stated, “Therefore, we will continue to pursue this thing through diplomatic channels.”

Marco Rubio Statement:

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the truce in a similar post on X following Trump’s statement. “Over the past 48 hours, VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik,” said Senator Rubio.

“I’m happy to report that the governments of India and Pakistan have decided to immediately halt hostilities and begin neutral negotiations on a wide range of topics. We applaud Prime Ministers Sharif and Modi for their statesmanship, wisdom, and caution in going the route of peace,” he continued. Prior to the announcement of the truce, India declared that any further acts of terror by Pakistan would be regarded as acts of war, and that India would react appropriately.

The warning was important because over the past three nights, Pakistan has been attacking civilian and military targets in northern India with missiles and drones. The strong Indian air defense system has intercepted almost all of them.
