Pawan Kalyan Reacts to Sharmistha Panoli Controversy, Calls for Equal Justice

Sharmistha Panoli Controversy:
Pawan Kalyan recently reacted to the controversy surrounding law student and influencer Sharmistha Panoli. He expressed his views on social media, defending her right to apologize and highlighting what he sees as a double standard in how such issues are handled in the country.

Sharmistha Panoli Controversy:
Sharmistha Panoli, a 22-year-old law student from Pune, found herself at the center of a storm after posting a controversial video on May 14, 2025. In the video, she responded to a Pakistani follower who questioned India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Her reply included comments that were seen as offensive towards Islam and Prophet Muhammad. The video quickly went viral, leading to heavy backlash on social media. Hashtags like #ArrestSharmistha began trending online.

Following the public outrage, Panoli deleted the video and issued an apology through her Instagram story and on X (formerly Twitter). In her statement, she offered an “unconditional apology,” explaining that she never meant to hurt anyone and would be more careful in the future. Despite this, an FIR was filed against her in Kolkata, and she was later arrested in Gurugram, Haryana.

The FIR against her was filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including promoting enmity between different religious groups and making statements intended to hurt religious sentiments. The police stated that the video contained offensive remarks targeting a specific religious group. After she was tracked down and arrested, she was presented before a magistrate and given transit remand.

On May 18, 2025, the Kolkata Police released a statement defending their actions, clarifying that her arrest followed all legal procedures. They mentioned that notices were issued, but Panoli was not available to receive them. A court later issued a warrant for her arrest. The police urged the public not to believe false or misleading claims and to rely only on verified information.

Reacting to the developments, Pawan Kalyan took to X to voice his concerns. He acknowledged that Sharmistha’s words were regrettable and hurtful to some, but he pointed out that she apologized and removed the content. He questioned why similar actions are not taken when elected leaders make offensive comments about Hinduism or Sanatana Dharma. “Where is the outrage when our faith is mocked?” he asked.

He stressed that blasphemy should be condemned in all forms, and secularism must apply equally to everyone. Kalyan ended his post by urging the West Bengal Police to act fairly and show that justice is the same for all communities.
