PM Modi in Thailand: Extends Aid to Myanmar After Earthquake

PM Modi in Thailand: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Thailand. PM Modi has arrived to attend the BIMSTEC conference being held in Thailand. Apart from the BIMSTEC conference, PM Modi met Myanmar’s military general Min Aung Hlaing on Friday. During this meeting, PM Modi expressed condolences to the people who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake in Myanmar and also assured all possible help.


PM Modi’s first meeting with General Min

Prime Minister Modi shared a post on social media about his meeting with a Myanmar military general. In this post, PM Modi wrote that he met Myanmar’s military general Min Aung Hlaing on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC conference being held in Bangkok. Once again, expressed condolences on the loss of life and property in the recent earthquake. India is doing everything possible to help its brothers and sisters in this difficult time.’ This is his first meeting with PM Modi after General Min took power in Myanmar by coup in February 2021. PM Modi said that ‘We discussed bilateral relations between India and Myanmar. And also discussed cooperation in connectivity, capacity building, infrastructure development, and other areas.’

Myanmar’s ruler praised India’s help

According to media reports, General Min Aung Hlaing thanked Prime Minister Modi for the relief assistance. He also praised the prime minister’s reconstruction work and leadership during the Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat and the learnings from it for Myanmar and other countries. India has started Operation Brahma to help earthquake-hit Myanmar. The two leaders talked for about 35 minutes. During this, the ruler of Myanmar also praised the quick help sent by India immediately after the earthquake on March 28.

India has built military field hospitals near Mandalay in Myanmar, where the needy are being treated. The Myanmar government has also praised it. Also, NDRF personnel are engaged in relief and rescue operations in Myanmar. Well over three thousand people have died, and about five thousand people have been injured in the earthquake in Myanmar. More than 370 people are missing across the country.
