PM Modi Talks to Iranian President After US Airstrikes

Modi Talks to Iranian President: During their conversation today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced concern over the recent intensification of the Iran-Israel conflict to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The United States entered the war by striking three locations in Iran, Natanz, Isfahan, and the mountain-buried Fordo. All three are key components of Tehran’s nuclear program, which it claims is solely for civilian use.

PM Modi wrote on X, “Had a conversation with Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran. We discussed the current situation in detail. I expressed serious concern over the recent escalation. I reiterated India’s call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy. We also stressed the need for an early return to regional peace, security, and stability.”

Take a look at the post:

At least six B-2 stealth bombers struck Fordo this morning. Tomahawk cruise missiles targeted the other two Iranian locations. Iran built Fordo secretly behind a mountain near the holy city of Qom, violating UN regulations. The facility became public in 2009. Iran initially described it as an “emergency” underground site meant to protect against air raids. Later, it revealed that Fordo was an enrichment complex capable of housing around 3,000 centrifuges.

Trump Warning to Iran:

US President Donald Trump spoke to the country after the strikes and gave Iran a severe warning. From the White House on Saturday night (local time), Mr. Trump declared, “There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran, far greater than we’ve witnessed over the last eight days.”

In reaction to Iranian missile attacks that injured Israeli civilians, the Israeli Air Force launched a new round of airstrikes against military facilities in western Iran. Any additional escalation, according to experts, will have broader ramifications for India’s trade with West Asian nations, such as Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.

Indian Exports to Iran:

In fiscal 2025, India’s exports to Iran totaled $1.24 billion. Major commodities included tea ($25.5 million), soya meal ($70.6 million), banana ($53.2 million), Bengal gram ($27.9 million), and basmati rice ($753.2 million). Last fiscal year, imports totaled $441.8 billion. In 2024–2025, India’s imports from and exports to Israel stood at $1.6 billion and $2.1 billion, respectively. India maintains close bilateral relations with both Iran and Israel. Houthi rebel strikes on commercial vessels have disrupted cargo transit through the Red Sea channels. The most recent conflict began with the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Strikes by Yemen-based Houthi militants escalated tensions around the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping route linking the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean.

About 80% of India’s merchandise trade with Europe and a major share of its trade with the US moves through the Red Sea. These two regions account for 34% of India’s total exports. Globally, 12% of trade and 30% of container traffic rely on the Red Sea Strait. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has already revised its forecast. It now expects global trade to shrink by 0.2% in 2025, compared to the earlier estimate of a 2.7% increase, mainly due to the ongoing tariff war.
