Telangana Cabinet Expansion on Ugadi

The Congress formed its government in Telangana in December 2023. The Chief Minister and first cabinet ministers assumed offices on December 7. Since then, the wait has been extended for complete cabinet expansion. However, the Telangana cabinet expansion will likely happen on 30 March, on the occasion of Ugadi, the Telugu New Year. On Monday, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud met the Congress high command in Delhi. The AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and AICC general secretary KC Venugopal discussed the credentials of potential candidates in the two-hour-long meeting. It looks like the high command will check and approve the candidates soon.

Besides some key portfolios, other critical legislative posts will be elected on the same day. Telangana Congress is yet to appoint the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Chief Whip. Several senior leaders expecting ministerial positions informed the party leadership to expedite the expansion to strengthen governance. Congress hopes this expansion will improve the administrative framework, aligning with its goals and principles.

It will be challenging for the top-level leadership to elect members for these vacant positions. Numerous permutations and combinations, such as community, region, and religion, must be considered. Meanwhile, members from districts like Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Adilabad, and Nizamabad had no representation in the cabinet, so a few from these regions are likely to get some portfolios.
