Telangana ERC Approves Power Purchase from NTPC Ramagundam

TGGENCO NTPC power purchase:

The Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC) has given approval to buy electricity from the third unit of the NTPC Telangana Super Thermal Power Station at Ramagundam. This new unit has a capacity of 800 megawatts (MW). The announcement was made on May 17, 2025, by TGERC Chairman Dr. Justice Devaraju Nagarjun.

TGGENCO NTPC power purchase:

Earlier, Telangana had already been buying power from the first two units of the same plant, each also having 800 MW capacity. With the addition of the third unit, the power supply to the state is expected to become more stable and reliable.

The cost of electricity from the third unit has been fixed at ₹4.12 per unit for the first year. TGERC has also advised that a formal Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) be signed between NTPC and the state’s electricity distribution companies.

Meanwhile, the Commission also addressed another issue related to the Singareni Stage-2 power plant. Telangana DISCOMs requested a re-evaluation of purchasing power from that project. As a result, TGERC has allowed them to withdraw the related petition for now.

In another decision, TGERC approved the purchase of 200 MW of solar power generated by NLCIL (Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Ltd) in Kutch, Gujarat. The solar power will be bought at a rate of ₹2.57 per unit, which is lower compared to thermal power rates, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly move.

These decisions are seen as steps toward strengthening Telangana’s power sector and ensuring affordable electricity for its people. The mix of thermal and solar energy will help in maintaining a balanced energy supply while moving towards sustainable development.
