Telangana Fire Services:
The Telangana government is planning a major step towards gender equality by proposing 33% reservation for women in the State Fire Department. This proposal was recently sent to the state government by fire service officials. If approved, the reservation will be implemented from the next recruitment notification.
Until now, the Fire Department did not recruit women for field-level firefighting roles due to the tough physical tests required. However, officials studied the systems in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, where women are already working as firefighters. In Tamil Nadu, for example, hundreds of women were trained and recruited into fire services in 2019.
Inspired by these examples, Telangana Fire Services has requested the government to allow similar opportunities for women in the state. Director General of Fire Services, Y. Nagireddy, said that if the government approves, the department will begin hiring women with reservation benefits in place.
In addition to this, the Fire Department is also recommending a law amendment. Currently, fire safety approval is mandatory only for high-rise buildings. But the department now wants to make it compulsory even for non-high-rise buildings, especially for businesses like small warehouses, furniture units, and small factories. These buildings also face fire risks, and the department believes fire clearance should be extended to them as well.
This move by the Telangana government aims to promote gender inclusivity and enhance fire safety across the state. If implemented, this initiative will open new career paths for women while also improving the safety standards in many business sectors.
It is a big step toward modernization, inclusivity, and safety in Telangana.
