Wang Yi in India: Why This Meeting Matters Amid Trump’s Tariff War

Wang Yi in India: On Monday, August 18, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will begin a three-day official visit to India. He will focus on reviewing stalled economic initiatives, strengthening bilateral communication channels, and restarting high-level negotiations on the long-disputed border.

Today, August 18, Wang Yi will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Tomorrow, August 19, he will join National Security Advisor Ajit Doval for a new round of Special Representatives (SR) talks on boundary issues. Later, he will visit Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. The timing of this meeting carries particular weight, as it coincides with rising tensions between Prime Minister Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump over escalating tariff measures on both India and China.

PM Modi Visit to China:
This meeting is going to also help India from the ground level as PM Modi is going to visit China in the end of August. It is said that PM Modi is likely to meet President Xi Jinping after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit (SCO) in Tianjin. This is going to be Modi’s first such kind of trip after seven years.

India and China Recent Clashes:

Wang Yi will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar this time to examine broader aspects of the bilateral relationship. The two leaders will hold their second round of discussions since the June 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, which killed soldiers on both sides and ruptured relations for the first time in decades.

The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and dragged on for years until both countries struck an agreement in October 2024 to withdraw soldiers from the final points of contention at Demchok and Depsang. That accord formally ended the prolonged impasse. Since then, both sides have steadily worked to ease tensions, from resuming diplomatic talks to lifting restrictions on people-to-people exchanges. Observers will closely monitor the latest SR-level talks as both countries attempt to strengthen the fragile thaw that has emerged since late last year.
