“War if India Doesn’t Release Water”: Bilawal Bhutto Warns

Bilawal Bhutto: Pakistan will go to war if India denies Islamabad its share of water under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), Pakistan Peoples Party leader and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto has said. He has threatened that if India denies water, it will have to fight again. Bilawal Bhutto also alleged that India has illegally suspended the Indus Waters Treaty.

“India has two options: share water fairly. Or we will seize all six rivers and supply water. We do not want war. If Pakistan uses water as a weapon, we will respond,” said Bhutto, referring to the six rivers in the Indus Basin. Bilawal Bhutto also said that the threat of not providing water is illegal under the UN Charter.

Bhutto’s response came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that India will never restore the 1960 water-sharing treaty. India suspended the agreement following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry responded to Amit Shah’s statement by calling it a disregard for international agreements.

Bhutto said that if India and Pakistan refuse to talk and there is no coordinated action against terrorism, violence in both countries will only escalate. He accused India of weaponizing terrorism for political purposes and accused India of working diplomatically to block Pakistan’s gains on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) front. Bilawal Bhutto alleged that while Pakistan had successfully moved from the FATF grey list to the white list, India was making every effort to drag Pakistan back to the grey list using misinformation and diplomatic pressure.
