Nidhi Tewari, IFS (2014), was named Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s private secretary by the Indian government on Monday, effective immediately. Tewari’s nomination was authorized by the Cabinet Appointments Committee under the Department of Personnel & Training’s (DoPT) directive. In the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the IFS officer presently has the position of Deputy Secretary. According to the notification, she will take up the position of Private Secretary at Level 12 of the pay matrix on a co-terminus basis or until further directives are given, whichever comes first.
Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, joined the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in 2022 as an Under Secretary and has been a Deputy Secretary since January 6, 2023.
Tewari is from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, which has served as the Lok Sabha seat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014. In 2013, she achieved the 96th position on the Civil Services Examination. She prepared for the UPSC while working in Varanasi as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) prior to passing the test.
Tewari worked in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) before to joining the PMO. She then played a significant position in the PMO, specifically in the “Foreign and Security” vertical. Where she reported directly to National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval thanks to her proficiency in foreign relations.
Along with duties about the state of Rajasthan, she oversaw important sectors like External Affairs, Atomic Energy, and Security Affairs. She played a crucial role during India’s G20 chairmanship due to her extensive involvement in international policy.
