Donald Trump has attacked Zohran Mamdani after his Democratic primary win in New York City’s mayoral race. Mamdani, a 33-year-old socialist, won 43.5% of the vote. With 90% of ballots counted, he leads decisively.
Trump called Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic” on Truth Social. He added, “He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart.” Trump also mocked Mamdani’s allies, calling them “AOC+3, Dummies ALL.”
Trump didn’t stop with Mamdani. He went after Senator Chuck Schumer and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He said Schumer is “groveling” over Mamdani. Trump also joked that Democrats should nominate “Low IQ” Jasmine Crockett for president and place “AOC+3” in Cabinet.
If elected in November, he would become New York’s first Muslim mayor. He is the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and Marxist scholar Mahmood Mamdani. His win marks a major step for the Democratic Socialists of America.
Mamdani backs free bus service, universal childcare, and a citywide rent freeze. These proposals hit home for many voters, especially with housing costs soaring.
Mamdani has the backing of Senator Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez. He currently serves as a state assemblyman from Queens. His campaign also gained attention for his vocal support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel.
The win signals a strong shift in the city’s political direction. It shows the increasing power of progressive voices in traditionally centrist spaces. While celebrated by the left, his victory is viewed by some party insiders as risky. Trump’s vocal backlash is likely a preview of broader Republican attacks heading into 2026 and beyond.
