The Elixir Review: The Elixir, a new Netflix original zombie thriller from Indonesian horror filmmaker Kimo Stamboel (The Queen of Black Magic), knows it’s walking a familiar path. Instead of reinventing zombie cinema, it focuses on delivering a fast-paced, chaotic ride packed with frights, emotions, and plenty of blood.
Running just under two hours, The Elixir tries to explore too many ideas at once, like family drama, corporate greed, and undead zombies, which makes it thrilling but uneven. It’s a mix of everything horror fans love and hate about zombie films.
The Elixir Movie Story:
The whole story revolves around one experimental drug called Elixir, which is created by a struggling Indonesian supplement company. This company owner, Pak (Donny Damara), who actually plans to shut down the business and retire, but as this medicine arrives at his home as a sample piece, he tries it, and from then on, the actual thrill starts. The surprising twist in this family is when it’s disclosed that Pak has a daughter, Kennes (Mikha Tambayong), son-in-law Ruddi (Dimas Anggara), and a lazy son, Bambang (Marthino Lio). The twist here is that Pak’s young wife, Karina (Eva Celia), was once Kennes’s best friend before betraying her.
After the sample medicine of this drug arrives at his home, Pak tests the new elixir, and he miraculously regains his youth. But the miracle quickly turns into a nightmare, and the so-called cure transforms people into the undead. As chaos spreads across the family compound and nearby village, survival becomes the only goal.
Stamboel uses the outbreak to deliver both gory action and emotional tension. While the film sometimes feels overloaded, it’s visually gripping and full of energy. The Elixir may not redefine zombie cinema, but it offers a wild, entertaining mix of horror and family drama, proving there’s still life (and death) left in the genre.
