The anticipation of a Mani Ratnam film has been really high. And this film has got everything to rock bottom. The film not just threw ashes on the expectations of the fans but also leading its way to be a biggest disaster in Mani Ratnam’s career. The reunion was not upto the mark as the fans wanted Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s collaboration to be a success. Now, this response can not make a way for another collaboration after this as fans think.
Kamal Haasan has a commanding, intense, and effective presence as Sakthivel; however, the character’s emotional tension and conflicts for power are well thought out but the script does not quite allow for it to come to fruition.
Silambarasan TR brings an intoxicating energy to the role of Amaran in his transition from a loyal follower of Sakthivel to a ruthless, warlord leader. While he portrays his transition well, the character’s progression feels rushed.
Trisha Krishnan and Abhirami’s voices add emotional heft to a couple of scenes and they fulfil their roles well despite some underdevelopment. Joju George and Mahesh Manjrekar deliver solid performances and they make their impression count despite the negligible screen time.
Positives
Breathtaking To Watch: Mani Ratnam dominates the visual presentation while Ravi K. Chandran’s cinematography explodes with breathtaking frames.
Powerful Performances: Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR inject so much intensity into their performances.
A.R. Rahman’s Music: The background completes the heavier moments in the film.
Negatives
Weak Second Half: After the interval, the film’s pace drops, with predictable plot twists. 4.
Underwritten Characters: Many of the supporting characters are devoid of dimension, and therefore carry less weight or impact.
Length: The film is long (163 minutes) and stretches out a couple of the sequences, making them feel flat.
Final Question
Although Thug Life has the visual spectacle and actors involved to keep audiences engaged, ultimately its writing and pacing keep the film from succeeding. Mani Ratnam’s direction works pieces of the film. The film, however, ultimately lacks the half-dozen emotional beats and riveting story one would expect from a collaboration like this.
