Actors avoiding Romance Stories. Why?

In recent times, many actors are preferring content oriented scripts and also now a days crime, thriller and suspense genres has got more audience. After the pandemic, viewers’ content style and movie preferences have changed a lot; most of the audience has seen international content and content-oriented movies in the pandemic. This has majorly affected some genres; of these, the most affected genre is the romantic. Earlier romance was a go-to genre for most of the audience, this is mainly because of the producer’s preference.

Earlier, romantic films were highly appreciated, and many actors and directors have established their careers through these films. Directors like Mani Ratnam, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Yash Chopra, Karan Johar, and many others have created a benchmark in making romantic films. Their films have been cult classics in the Indian film industry. Actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Nagarjuna, Chiranjeevi, Kamal Hassan, and many others have established their careers initially with romantic films.

But, now what happened and why are many actors avoiding romance scripts? For this question, Romantic film director Gautham Vasudev Menon has answered, “No star actor wants to do a romance these days. I approached stars in Tamil, Telugu, and even Kannada, but the minute I told them it was a romance, they either postponed our meeting or didn’t want to meet! You should ask them why.”

The main problem here is that filmmakers are killing their own business in theatres by giving more focus to digital sales. Initially people thought OTT platforms are going to provide all the films in one platform but here the problem is when a film is release it is getting released immediately in one month, but if a film gets released in OTT after the theatrical release of 3 to 4 months there will be enough space to do business in theatres also. Too much dependency on digital platforms will one day fade away theatres also.
